there is a good article on "toning:" thanks for the link http://rg.ancients.info/guide/toning.html |
Re: coin doctoring
I was in a bookstore last weekend and I started thumbing through " Coin Collecting For Dummies". I thought it would be silly, but if you're a rookie like myself there was actually a lot of useful info on a lot of different topics.

Mostly from folks that think a coin is supposed to look brand new. Kind of like detailing a car before it's sold. I got burned a little buying an 1884s Morgan on ebay. I knew it was a gamble. The coin was damaged by a PVC stain. Then to add insult to injury, some one dipped it, trying to eliminate the stain. Dipping and whizzing can remove the cartwheel. The cartwheel is what mesmerizes sheep into buying overpriced coins. Toning is really fun. I've gotten some very attractive results just using a butane lighter on silver coins. Pretty rainbow colors. Adding chemicals makes things even more dramatic. Monster rainbows. My guess is probably 90% of all monster coins are artificially toned. Kind of an art form. Experts can see past most of it. When I realized even dumb ass me could fake a toner, I quit numismatics in favor of bullion and 90%. They are real pretty though. |

PCGS has a book called:
The Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection It has a lot of pictures and descriptions. I recommend it if you are seroius about buying rare coins. I picked up a copy on ebay a few years ago, you can also get a copy by joining a collectors club at pcgs.com http://www.pcgs.com/join/index.chtml |
